I celebrated my 50th birthday in March. As 'The Pharmacist Coach,' I realise I have spent my 40s on a mission to integrate pharmacy and coaching core competencies, in a way that inspires and activates us to do what is within our power to create positive practice environments for ourselves and empower our patients and clients to partner with us as they become increasingly proactive about managing their own health and wellbeing. I believe we need both pharmacist and coaching skills to fully engage ourselves, our systems and our people in proactively creating the world we want and challenging the status quo that keeps us stuck.
In February, it was my honour to partner with the FIP CPS to use my Pharmacist Coach skills to facilitate six live online workshops to provide pharmacists globally with the opportunity to have their say on Positive Practice and to explore barriers and enablers of positive practice and professional sustainability. One of the most striking observations I had was the deep commitment among pharmacists towards ongoing learning and development.
However, there are challenges. Transferring the theory into practice to build mastery requires a level of energy, focus, consistency and openness to feedback and behaviour change that is difficult to sustain, particularly when we are so busy COPING with the constraints of the imperfect system in which we operate, that we do not dedicate space for REFLECTION. Challenging our innate bias towards maintaining the status quo, even when we KNOW it is no longer working, requires structure, a commitment to a bigger WHY, and social support to overcome it. It also requires us having evidence that a different path to success is not only possible, but attainable.
One of the ways I create structure, social support and a commitment to my bigger why is by prioritising my reflective practice sessions with my coach, mentor, super-visor and mastermind groups on a regular basis. With growth oriented structures, supports and commitments, individual and professional progress is inevitable.
One of the things I most appreciate about the International Coaching Federation (ICF) is that it offers professionals committed to skill mastery a quality assured path to demonstrate professional growth. As an ICF member, I subscribe the the professional code of ethics and have received at least a minimum quantity and quality of training in core coaching competencies. IF I wish to pursue further professional growth, the ICF offers three credentialing levels, which offers coaches the opportunity to demonstrate increasing levels of experience and growth from competency to proficiency to mastery. From the over 50,000 coaches credentialed by ICF, only 4% have attained the credential of Master Certified Coach globally, of which 11 are located in Ireland.
In order to aspire towards mastery in any field, having the opportunity to see mastery demonstrated is an inspiring privilege. Gail Moore's resources at MooreMasterCoaching was one of the resources that inspired me to dare to dream of becoming an MCC Coach. In my own practice, I have found one of the best ways to learn how different coaches handle coaching challenges that arise in a session is by hearing it demonstrated. An example is worth a thousand explanations! It really helps to deepen and anchor the learning. This is why I am so honoured to contribute back to a community that has been such a rich resource in my own learning and development journey.
