Hi Rachel,
Happy New Year. In these newsletters, my intention is to bring you news and opportunities to help you and your patients/customers to grow, develop, prosper and flourish.
I am delighted that M.C.I - The Medical Coaching Institute is bringing its innovative Medical Coaching Programme to Ireland in April, May and June 2016. This is the first time M.C.I. have brought their internationally renowned programme to Ireland and I am extremely excited about integrating Medical Coaching Skills into my existing pharmacy and coaching practice.
Why?
It will support me to deepen my ability to support patients with chronic and/or terminal diagnoses, while also providing me with the structure and support to role-model self-care by immediately applying what I learn to optimise my own health and well-being. I am passionate about empowering my clients and increasing their motivation to make and sustain the changes they want to make in their lives. And it will contribute to both my accredited pharmacy and coaching CPD for 2016! Does this resonate with you?
So what is Medical Coaching?
Medical Coaching is a specific emotional and mental coaching process that supports patients to cope with their medical condition or crisis and to establish their mental and emotional well-being as a way of life.
These are exactly the challenges our patients face daily. And pharmacists, as patient-facing healthcare professionals are ideally placed to support them to do this.
The Medical Coaching process enables us to empower our patients to develop their personal resources, gain personal insights and initiate actions that enable them to find happiness and well-being, even in the face of living with a chronic condition. Medical Coaching provides us as healthcare professionals with the tools to support our patients to connect for life.
The value of the Medical Coaching model is that it addresses all aspects of the patient's life including the symptoms of disease. During the process, the healthcare professional trained as a Medical Coach works with the patient to create a comprehensive action plan. The plan incorporates areas such as the physical body, emotions, thoughts, spirit, social connections, and the overall environment.
As the WHO states "Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity". While our healthcare training primarily focuses on physical well-being, Medical Coaching focuses primarily on the emotional and mental aspects of the illness. By combining deep knowledge and skill to support ALL aspects of health, we can have even more impact on the health, well-being, care and safety of the clients we serve.
