Visioning

Projecting Your Tomorrow and Heading Toward it Today

When your life comes to an end, what will you have accomplished?  Do you see the remainder of your life as limitless in its potential? Do you feel you have great, untapped promise? Sadly, most people feel they are capable of a life far more enriching than the one they are currently living.  What’s missing? What steers them away from what they want and makes them accomplish far less than they had hoped?

Extensive research done at several prestigious universities points to the same conclusion: every person who accomplishes a great deal, and performs at optimum levels, does so by having a clear vision of what they want. Having a clear vision and strong goals to support that vision are the hallmark of every form of high achieving.  To achieve anything, you first have to see what you want.

In month 2 of the ALIGNMENT module of the L.E.A.D. Online Mastermind Programme, we explore what visioning is, why it’s so important, and why having a vision – a mental picture of what you desire – is an important key to success in life.

“Your vision will become clear only when you look into your heart.
Who looks outside, dreams. Who looks inside awakens. Carl Jung

Having a clear vision, aligned with what is most important to you, is an important pre-requisite to achieving your goals.

"If you want to reach a goal, you have to see the reaching in your own mind, before you actually arrive at your goal" Zig Ziglar

For pharmacists, visioning can be a foreign concept.  We often identify ourselves as problem-solvers rather than visionaries.

You might be thinking, "Why bother with my vision for the future when today's problems seem overwhelming?"

Both problem solving and visioning are important; they are quite different approaches that should be used in combination.

Visioning generates a common goal, hope, and encouragement.  It offers a possibility for fundamental change.  It gives a sense of purpose and control.  If you are working as part of a team, it gives your team something to move toward and generates creative thinking and passion.

With problem solving, a team can become mired in technical details and political problems and may even disagree on how to define the problem. Problem solving, although useful, rarely results in any really fundamental change.

A problem is something negative to move away from whereas a vision is something positive to move toward.

A vision focuses on what possible.  In moving toward a vision, you will be likely to encounter a number of problems to solve.

In the real world, of course, having a vision is only a first step. An old proverb says,

A vision without a plan is just a dream.
A plan without a vision is just drudgery.
But a vision with a plan can change the world.
